Your baby relies on your placenta for food supply. She doesn't experience any "need". Your system provides everything for her. Also, your baby has been moving freely in amniotic fluid, inside your womb, for many weeks before you even start feeling her. These movements, or "kicks", in the womb, are normal, just like sucking a finger, or a toe, is a normal thing to happen, during her maturation in your womb. Yes, this is all a question of maturation, reflexes, and vitality. As she gets stronger, bigger, and more energetic, you start feeling your baby's movements: this usually happens for the first time, around the 21st week, though it is just as normal if you feel her earlier, or later, in your pregancy. But in case you don't know, she was feeling YOU before you could feel HER (the vibrations from your steady heartbeat, your - oops, sorry about that - bowel movements, the food dropping in your stomach, etc., all become familiar to your baby. I can tell you I remember feeling my baby moving and turning during my meals: I was told by my doctor that babies have a perception of something happening in their mother's stomach as food reaches it. Anyway... want my advice? - Just let go of all the "explanations" and focus on this beautiful and exciting newfound communication with your baby.

Babies just move to get comfortable, or to change positions... sometimes your movements make the baby move more, or sounds that they hear outside of the body that are loud can startle them. Moving is GOOD so don't worry!
Babies are always testing out their muscles and what movements they can do... they learn in your belly what to do to move what muscles! Your baby is just learning and growing.

The baby has been moving since around 10-11 weeks, it's only now that he/she has got big enough for you to feel it. They move just because they can, because they need to for their muscles to start growing, because it's instinctive.
A fetus can't be hungry it shares your blood supply, it doesn't eat

I think it could mean a lot of things, but for the most part I think it's just the baby exercising his/her new muscles in preparation for life outside the womb.
