Having sat on an aircraft all that way,
May have aggravated, existing varicose veins .
( if this pain is restricted to the left leg only ,
that seems unlikely)

You did not say,
whether you were able to weight bear, on that leg
this may indicate a stress fracture .

Muscle and tendon injury, can also be extremely painful.
Especially if they involve your Achilles tendon
.
Rest and wait, a day or two ,
with leg up, as often as possible ,
Warm compress ,
paracetamol for pain .

if you are still in severe pain,
go back to the doctor
and ask for a further examination,
And more treatment .

I do hope you soon feel better

Check here a very effective sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Well
I found many interesting info about sciatica here: http://curesciatica.toptips.org

While looking for a miracle cure, it has to be understood that sciatica pain in itself is not a disease. It is actually a symptom or a group of symptoms with an underlying cause that needs to be targeted if some sort of permanent pain relief is what one is looking for. But one thing is absolutely clear. Incorporating a few exercises that have a beneficial effect on sciatica pain in daily regime is of great help and whether a patient is taking drugs or not, these exercises ensure that his muscles are kept in a toned condition that lessen any flare up of pain. Just a few stretching exercises can bring about a drastic change in the levels of pain and signify the importance of exercise in the management of sciatica pain.

Pain can be referred from places other than the head. This deals with headaches but the principle works for all kinds of pain.
Muscles get knots called trigger points. These make the muscles tight causing them to press on nerves and other thing.
#1 The first thing is to take a couple swigs of molasses or eat a couple of bananas. They contain magnisium and potassium both of which muscles need.
#2 WATER she should be drinking 1/2 gallon minimum. The head of neurology at UCDavis likens a body running low on water to a car running low on oil (the engine can seize).
Get a good (deep tissue) massage (to loosen the trigger points) on the back, shoulders and neck. Make sure to press up at the base of the skull where it meets the spine.
You rub or lightly scratch everywhere on your head. You will hit spots that are tender these are trigger points. The idea is to rub across them 6-12 times per session up to six times per day until they go away.
For more information on trigger points read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.

Visit another doctor to put your mind at rest. Say visit a GP near to a friend or relatives house, that is away from your home. You can visit any GP when away from your home, if staying within their territory.

Get it rechecked with 'fresh' eyes. A thorough re-check is likely to give you better info than us on here speculating. Especially if we come up with complex issues that you 'might' have, when something totally different may be the reality. I'd suggest vein or nerve problems or possibly arthritis, but go to a GP expert.

Save the stress and get another check over.

Good luck! Rob

does it seem to be more in the bone or nerve?

it sounds like nerve pain ... you may have put pressure on the Sciatic nerve from sitting on a long flight and caused an irritation to the nerve... my suggestion would be heating pad and a good anti-inflammatory such as Aleve. Sciatic nerve pain can be a bugger to relieve. i would recommend you go to an Orthopedic Dr. to get a defined diagnoses. Massage therapy could do wonders ....

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.
