I don't think I'm doing it right, the melons are not coming out perfect ball shaped.

When using a melon-baller, start out your scoop as if you are scooping ice cream. You may have to finesse it a little to scoop it out into an exact ball shape. Think about when you are making a snowball with your hands, it doesn't come out perfectly until you pack on a little more snow and shape it.

Using A Melon Baller

(It helps if the melon is nice and ripe, not too hard) Stick the melon baller deeply into the flesh and turn it completely around. Then you will get a nice ball. Otherwise they will be half-balls or not really round. Try this and see if it works for you. But the thing about the melon being ripe as opposed to hard is part of it.

Place the baller, open side down, on the melon and push down until the melon touches the underside of the baller. At this point, your baller is completely full of melon. Without moving the baller, twirl the handle a half-circle. You now have a perfect melon baller.

You use it the same way you use an ice cream scoop.
