What effects will the exclusion of salt from diet have on the body?

Isn't that an oxymoron "NO salt or NOT"
Anyway, iodine is added to salt in most of the world's countries, it is something our bodies need for proper thyroid function. In many third world countries there are health problems due to low or no iodine in their diet. So if you avoid salt altogether, which I think would be impossible, you would probably eventually have a thyroid problem.

Not a great deal. Did you know that salt is adictive, it can cause high blood pressue and strokes.It also affects people who have Menieres Disease. 6 grammes a day is all that is recomended for an male adult. Don't be fooled by food packaging, on the ingredients list they give levels as sodium. This is sodium chlorate and is two and a half times more than salt. Look at foods with reduced fat, there you will see that the salt/ sodium levels are higher to normal foods, this is because salt is also a flavour enhancer.

You will probably end up with a lack of iodine, a necessary mineral your body needs. I don't think it is possible to exclude all salt from your diet, but if you are talking about ADDED salt, that's different. Many people add too much salt, and as a result, can retain water, raise their blood pressure, etc.

Total elimination of ANY element of a balanced diet is harmful in the long run. While it is good to moderate your salt intake, too little salt can cause an imbalance called hyponatraemia - or abnormally low sodium in your body.

Hyponatraemia often goes undiagnosed because symptoms (fatigue, poor concentration, confusion, poor balance and incontinence) are rather vague, and could apply to so many 'common' states of being in this mad, mad world - stress, burnout, or just aging.

So cut back, don't cut out!

Well you can't exclude all salt as it is in many pre done meals, or maybe you never eat them! Don't ever add salt to food you are cooking, you will be amazed at how much better your food will taste. Your blood pressure will definately be lower and you will probably notice that you don't suffer from water retention. Luck.xx

You dont need to completely exclude salt from your diet, because you always need sodium in your body but less salt is better!!

If you mean the salt you add to your food in cooking etc it will have no effect at all, you will get all the salt you need in your everyday food.

The use of salt will raise blood pressure and create hardening of the arteries not to mention balance problems from the inner ear canal.
