Use pads. They create less hassle. Use Always or Stayfree overnight brand if possible especially if this is your first period. The directions are on the back. If you start at school just tye a sweater around your waist and go to the nurse's office. She should have some in the office. You should also tell your sister or mother that your starting so you'll be better prepared. Also your periods will be irregular for a while.

Well, honey, your life is going to be hell. :) No, it's really not a scary thing. I was embarrassed about it at first too, but it's really nothing to be ashamed of. It's completely natural! If you want to carry around pads or tampons, go right ahead! If your mom makes fun of you, just remember she had to go through it all too, and more than likely, she felt the exact same way you did, and if she makes fun of you, she's probably still a little embarrassed about it herself!
Seriously, do what you need to do. If you start in school, school nurses always have something. Most girls bathrooms have machines. One good tip: If you do bleed on your panties, rinse them with COLD water. Hot water makes the stain set.
For pads, I use Always Ultra Thin Slenders with Wings because I'm a pretty small woman. Bigger ones bunch up on me and make me leak. Tampons (which I prefer not to use) I went for the most slender Tampax had to offer.
Good luck, honey, and welcome to your first step into womanhood.

:) Your so cute! Well, first, just because "all your friends" are getting it, doesn't neccesarily mean you will get it soon to. Every women's body is different. I got mine at 13. Anyhow, I would be honest with your mom about it and ask her to be serious since you are young and are unsure of a lot of things that are happening to you, she should understand. If you want to buy them yourself, I think that would be ok. The brand I use (or used, I'm pregnant at the moment ) is Always pads. There a good brand.
And I have to tell you, they probably only make fun of you because it's a special time in your life. And they probably also think it's "cute". Good luck and dont be embarrassed. It's a very natural and normal part of life. We ALL have to deal with it.

Hey, I think Linnys explained thingsd for you pretty well so I wont rant on. Don´t worry to much about your mum, I think you´ll probly find shes embarrased to talk about it, and thats her way of dealing with it. She´ll come round. Is there a teacher in school you could ask?
If your worried about ´it´ starting while your in school (or out shopping etc) nip down to your local co op or Spar and by a box of Sanatry towels (not tampons yet) and keep one tucked away in your bag some where. You should always be able to get ´always´ (in a green packet) any where so try to get them. But dont worry if you cant any will do, you dont need any thing fancy.
Heres 2 websites that should give you all the information you need...
http://beinggirl.com/en_US/pages/home.jsp
and
www.always.com
Any ways dont worry bout it to much it, I didnt know a thing when I started mine! And as for your mum, dont worry she´ll come round, she just needs to get over the embarrasment side of it.. at the end of the day it happens to every girl at some point!!

First of all I know its a little embarrasing. Talking to an body about the subject is hard. I started my period when I was 8 yrs old. talk about embarrasing. Even now its hard for me to talk to my mother about those things, and Im 19 now. The best thing to do, is talk to your mom even though she will probally joke about for a little bit. But its a serious subject. If you still don't feel comfortable talking about it to your mom, maybe you have a friends mom who you feel comfortable with talking about it. Umm on the brands for pads I use Always Ultra and for tampons I use Tampax. It really all depends on the flow of ur period, I know that sounds gross. But if you have a heavy flow u wanna getting pads tht say over night protection and tampons u would probally wanna look for super in tampons.

Hun....it is such a shame that you dont feel you can chat with your mum about this............age whilst plays a part in this matter, you get other signs as well.usually some sort of spotting [little smudges marks in your underwear] and with this in mind its always much nicer / fresher to use a pantie liner any of them are good carefree have ones that are NOT perfumed...........so at that point when you have seen some signs of this coming you can then begin to prepare.....IMO under NO circumstances use a tampon to start with, look at the thin but good brands of towels, kotex, stayfree? etc this is one area that I think you can NOT go with the cheap ones, the next question is wings or not.I dont like the wings but my daughter does..all comes down to personal preference............
If you have any more indepth questions then please feel free to email me directly.........
Am interested to know is you sister older than you or what? as it seems very odd that your mum finds this a subject to tease about........

The best thing for you to do, is to start wearing panti liners, this when it does come your protected. I was 11 when i got mine, and my mom didn't prepare me for it, so I know how you feel about feeling uncomfortable talking to your mom. The best thing for you to do is talk to your school nurse, and maybe she could talk to your mom, and if you don't have a Dr, I would ask the nurse about choosing one or talk , to see if she can help. I myself, picked my own Dr, but not til years later. The way girls prepare and approach this subject is different than when I was kid. Talk to your school nurse, to see what she advice she can give you.

not exactly the right place for the question but that doesn't really matter.
EVERY WOMAN (female over the age of at least 16) has their period. I was very shy about it and still am not as open as others about my menstural cycle.
I really appaul your mom for making fun of it, but maybe it's your cue to tell her you are not laughing and need to know what to do.
Your mom and your sister (assuming she's older) already know about having periods so it doesn't really matter that they know about it.

Sorry it's hard to talk to your mom about this. I would reccommend pads, stayfree, or kotex. They are self-adhesive (they stick to your undies). You can carry one or two in your purse, or backpack (in a small compartment of your backpback that no one else gets into, and to prevent one of your books. from "kicking" it out of your bag when you are grabbing a book quickly. If you carry them in your purse, please inf you can, put them in a different section (like in the back) from your wallet, etc. Since you haven't started yet, in your back pack, you might want to consider carrying one pair of undies that is clean, so "in case" you need to change your undies, you are prepared. Also, please do talk to your mom about this. She may "make fun of you" because she is embarrassed to talk about it with you. Just, please let her know that because you are at that age and stage of your life that you need to know, and have the supplies, that you need to have a one on one talk with her about it. I wish you the best. Take care.
