Is slave music (also called soul or gospel) still evident in today's music or is it a thing of the past? If it is still alive, where (in what music) does it exist?

I think you can still hear a whole lot of it in a whole lot of places! It's evolved a bit, but it's everywhere; it's in jazz, blues, r&b, hip-hop, some rock even. It laid way for many genres. Gospel is still alive and well in many Southern churches.

Definitely still elements of it in today's music - go to any music store and you can find either a "soul" section or "rhythm and blues."
