I took the bag of shrimp out of the freezer at 12 noon today. I would of done it earlier but I slept in. However, I need the shrimp fully thawed by 5. What can I do to make them defrost faster without leaving them in the fridge? I don't know where the heck my colander went, so I can't leave 'em under cold water in it. Can I take a deep shallow dish and have run under cold water in that? Any ideas?

When you defrost seafood, make sure you do it with cold water. Sudden temperature changes promote a particular bacteria that will make you sick. Do not leave them at room temperature. Also, do not use hot or warm water to defrost.
You can take them out of the bag and give them a cool water bath when you get home. It will take a little longer, but your food will be safer.

Just put the shrimp into the cold water, but after they're thawed you'll need to 'drain them' well ... if you can't find your colander, use about 6-8 paper towels under them, spread them out and put about 3-4 paper towels on top and 'press' so that all the water gets off them. Shrimp grow in water, so 'soaking them' to thaw them won't hurt them at all, nor will it change their 'flavor' ... and it might actually remove some of the salt in them, which isn't that good for you to begin with.

Yes, you can defrost them in cold ( NOT WARM) water in a bowl. Just change the water every 10 minutes or so, a couple of times. Lay on paper towel to drain and refridgerate till ready to use.

Shrimp thaws fast. Shrimp thaws within a few minutes sitting in a bowl of cold water. I don't recommend thawing them with hot water, as that actually starts cooking the shrimp. You'll notice that when the shells start turning pink.

I use a bowl of warm water. I know it says to use cold water only, but I've used warm water countless times with no problem. The defrost in a matter of minutes this way.

Just put them in warm water until they thaw. Take them out before they become warm, drain them, and then place them back in the refrigerator.
