I mean teens that they still have custody of(under 18)? Doesn't the first amendment prevent that? What age does one have to be before they can choose their own religion?

They cannot stop you from "converting" in your mind and heart. However they can possibly stop you from going out and attending services or meetings of that other religion. Not wise, if you are over 16, unless it is clearly a secret sect.

In some Church's they must get their parent permission before they can get baptized if they are under 18. But some church don't care. If the child is looking a feels that that is the right path for them then I think they can convert at that age. I just hope that they have the support of their parent or it will be a long hard road.

They can tell teens not to attend certain services, have certain books or paraphernalia in the house, etc. However, they have no jurisdiction over what the teenager believes or who they pray to alone in their room.

One problem in some areas is that libraries will tell parents what teenagers checked out. This results in lots of Wiccan and atheist books being stolen from libraries, because the kids are afraid their parents will find out.

You can choose your own religion at any age. The problem is that, if you are under age and in the custody of your parents, they have the perfect right to forbid you to _practice_ that religion, at least under their roof, if they disapprove of it.

All you will do by preventing your child from expressing their religious freedom is ensure that when they do turn 18, they'll be vehemently opposed to your religion. You can explain to them why you feel your religion is correct, but how would you feel if your parents tried to impose a different religion on you?

Unfortunately you can't do much of anything as long as you are under aged. Once you become of age then it's up to you to decide what you want to do with everything that pertains to your life as it's your life and your decisions to make and no one else's.

Parents can't take away what's in your heart.
They can set the rules of behavior while you still live at home though.
