When your dog barks or bites, you just have to put your hand over his muzzle, and say No sharply. Your hand is just like you biting him which is what the alpha pair (if he was in an actual pack.) would do. If he yelps or crys, he is just startled because he never new that you would "bite" back. Dont worry, this technique will not hurt the dog emotionally or physically. I watched it on the Dog Whisperer with Ceaser Milian. Then I checked with my vet and he said that that was the best technique next to just saying No and you dog not obeying.

Have fun with your new Basset Hound! I heard that they live a long time and make GREAT pets! Good Luck!!!!!! :)

ALSO NEVER USE A SHOCK COLLAR ON A PUPPY OR AND ANIMAL. ANY ONE WHO USES THEN (TO ME) ARE CRUEL AND DONT DESERVE ANIMALS! THIS ISNT DIRECTED AT YOU........ BUT HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF SOMEONE SHOCKED YOU IN THE NECK AREA.

Everytime he barks or bites, in a stern voice (always try and use same tone) with a light tap on his nose with either your hand or a newspaper out loud say no. Keep it consistent though, after several times of doing this he will get the message. But, remember keep it consistent.

Fill a squirt bottle with water and every time he barks, squirt him and say NO or NO BARK... Try to aim for the ears or face..
A shock collar is cruel... Plus, this is a puppy..
If he is biting, when he bites, pull your hand back and in a high pitched voice and loud say OUCH!!

Sounds like he's fear aggressive. Make the dog submit to you because he thinks he's in charge. When he goes off on you, if he's fearfull and pulling away, get down to his level and give him no eye contact or no voice commands, scoot closer and closer to him so he's cornered and sit there till he's calm. Then lightly pet him and talk soothingly. Eventually he will feel more comfortable with you and stop. If he's not backing away while barking, roll him on his back and make him stay there till he's calm so he learns how to submit.

Use a shock collar. It has two settings, one is a warning buzz and the other is the shock. Buzz the dog before you sap him and say no and if it continues shock the mutt .
