many men have this macho quality, and a fear of losing. that fear is found in sports, games, and relationships... there are levels possessiveness that can be considered OK, and jealousy is not always a bad thing... but combine the two, and there are often problems. if a man becomes controlling then you know there is a problem. a woman needs an amount of freedom, and she should not allow for anyone to take that from her.
men have the need, sometimes, to be in charge and feel like the one who wears the pants in the relationship, also if the man feels as though the woman is better then him he tends to get jealous quickly, for fear of her finding someone better then him.
another aspect of jealousy is guilt. men get upset when they them selves have done something wrong they tend to project their guilt onto their partner.
it is hard to say exactly why one man is jealous or possessive however i feel as though i have covered most of the major points regarding his topic...

Some men may become jealous easily if they have been been cheated on or dumped. Others may do this if they are after sex and do not want you to drift to other men. Some are insecure, and are afraid to lose someone who loves them.

Because they feel that they are not good enough. Guys with confidence don't get jealous or possessive!
