He kept giving me dirty looks the first few times we made eye contact. Now we're in a group together and he's being really nice to me. What's up with that?

Guys are weird, plain and simple. Maybe he got the wrong impression of you and once he got to know you he decided to be "good boy".

Maybe he's just shy. What you interpreted as a dirty look could be a neutral glance to him. Now that he knows it's okay to talk to you, he may have opened up a bit.

maybe he was having sour candy at the time he first looked at you.
Its just a look, it means nothing. If you are worried about it, ask him and see if he gets annoyed.Then wonder why your group didn't do such a decent job as a group

There's a couple of easons. In grup he may realize you're not a bad person afterall. It could also be that in grou he's accepted u as a reality he can't change.

it could be that, that's what it looked like but, in all actuality, he was not. my daughter always looks mad and she's not.
