I had a theft under $300 charge in NY 8 years ago, and I was sentenced to do 24 comm. service, I never did them cause I moved back to MD with my family, and now I enlisted in the Navy a week ago, and this popped up, so ,y recruiter is seeing what can be done, because I have to leave for basic training in June, but I have the feeling that i might have to do these hours before I can leave.

I would suggest that you work with your local volunteer center to find some one-time and short-term volunteer work. Volunteer centers specialize in connecting you with meaningful volunteer opportunities that match your interests.

I suggest affiliates of the Hands on Network and Points of Light Foundation. One of your local affiliates is called Greater DC Cares:

Here are some other links:

As non-profit organizations, these volunteer centers can also provide you with the appropriate documentation that you may need for community service hours.

Good luck!

Check if your courthouse and your recruiter will accept working in the office as community service. If they do in your area you could volunteer to answer phones, work with the DEPS, anything the recruiters need thats not confidential could go through you.

Call the local courthouse or police department and ask them what will qualify.

Even if the navy is willing to overlook you not doing your required pennance and skipping the state, you should do it and clear your record or it will keep popping up to haunt you in your work life forever.

Grab your phone book and look up not-for-profit agencies in your area. Some do provide that service. Churches too. Good luck.
