Anyways, ive been working in the ABC book with the 3 lines with the dotted int he middle. and I will have her copy the letters. I will show her how and have her do it, no matter how many times I do it, she still acts like she can't. I dont know if she is playing around or if this is normal. Like I draw a big big, and she will draw a line with little dots, waaay off. I don't get mad, but ill be honest i get a little frusterated cause i think she is playing games. Please help!!.

By 4 she should start to write letters and even her name. She may need some occupational therapy to help her along. I would discuss it with your pediatrician and see if you can get an evaluation by an occupational specialist. If necessary, they can help her a couple times a week in 1/2 hour sessions.

I have two boys (3 and 5), and they receive speech therapy. I have a couple friends whose kids get occupational therapy. It's great because the kids learn and receive help in a fun environment. Plus, they can give you tools to help your daughter out at home. Best of luck to you and your sweet girl!

every child developes at a different pace, my child is 4 too, and he can write his name and about 15 other words, he can read about 30 words... alot of his friends are at the same level, alot arnt, some kids that are a few months older than him cant write 1 letter of the ABC...

dont label your little girl as stupid or of learning disability, she will come to these things when she is ready, you cannot force it, just carry on with what you are doing, make it a game, read to her, draw with her etc etc... but DO NOT WORRY!!!!

if she gets to 6 and cant write her name, then i would start to worry!!

you are doing a good job, and sound like an excellent parent, take no notice of the other kids, i have no doubt that what one can do another cant and vice verse, they all are very different!

My 3 year old son does things like that. He can copy the letter when we do them one on one, but then when he's on his own sometimes he'll do the letters correctly but other times he'll do squigly lines and call them the letter. Other times I'll ask him to write a letter that I know he knows and he'll pretend he doesn't know ask me to show him again. I think he's afraid that if he just does it I'll stop paying attention to him, and by pretending he can't he keeps my attention.

If I were you, I'd put away the lined paper for now, it can cause kids to get upset about not doing things "perfectly" if it doesn't fit correctly on the lines. For now, just use white computer paper and don't worry if the letters are the right size or not.

ditch the lined paper, just practice the letters on a regular piece of paper for now to have a clue how the letters are made.
Try things such as shaving cream (the cream kind) or sand on a large cookie sheet that has maybe a 1 inch edge- This uses more gross motor skills (entire hand and arm) rather than fine motor skills (holding and using a pencil).

I have a nephew who just turned 5, and I have tried to get him to write his name since he was 3-not only that, he has been in pre-k since August and still doesn't recognize his name while all of his classmates are writing their names and are progressing great. However, when my niece was that age, I couldn't get her to do it either, but pre-k helped her. I think you are kind of like me, which as horrible as this sounds, we can't teach! I know my nephew isn't slow, but he is so stubborn. Your child may be going through the same thing. There really isn't much advice that will help your situation. Just breathe and thank the lord you have such a gift! Good luck, and if she is playing games, all the more power to her to learn manipulation so early-she and my nephew would get along so well!

This will take lots and lots of patience and practice. My four-year-old daughter is in preschool now and still has problems with some letters. I'd say you're doing just fine by taking the time to teach her! Children all learn at their own pace and the more we push and prod - the longer it may take. Good luck to you!

She's tired of you harping on her about her writing. My suggestion is stop trying to make her into an academic allstar and let her be a 4 year old child.

ok don't think learning disability, my son is 4 and there are days when he wants to do it and he doesn't, for awhile i was pushing to hard, like lets practice tracing and so on and after me being so persistant it wasn't fun to him anymore, just kind of go a little slower, i gave it a 2 day break and got him a dry erase board, he participates almost always now

She is four! Unless she is a child genius, her motor and coordination skills are not developed enough yet. Give her a chance to start school and she will pick it up right away. Don't pressure her. Ask your mom when YOU began writing perfectly.

She may not be ready, sounds like she just needs more time. If she is interested you can encourage her to "write" but it doesn't have to look like yours. In fact, scribbles and whatnot are great preperation for writing and that's hwo they learn. She will let you know when she wants to really "write" letters or words!!
