Not a simple answer, you must go back to the election of the current US prez. He was elected under less than ideal conditions and terms. He was considered a lame-duck Prez his first two weeks in office and was seen by experts as a prez that would not be re-elected. And most americans just hoped for a quite 4 years, while political comedians had a free-for-all with his office. Then 911 happened. And suddenly, the nation looked to him and said---"what are you gonna do"?. So here is a prez that at frist was a joke to his people, now put into a situation that he must defend his people. But unlike foes of the past, there was no defined ememy to lock onto, no uniformed armies, no classic war secenrio that all the pentagon generals had been trained to fight. But the prez had to find some enemy to serve up to his outraged people. If not, he would go from being a joke of office to being impeached. And mind you it goes further than just him, the credibality of the entire republican party was at stake. and those that give money to them. We're talking Billions of dollars. So, someone had to get shot, some dark evil foe had to be found to focus the peoples anger at---and off him. and so began the political spin. Well, I think you know the rest of the story.

Because Saddam was a nutcase, the West has a problem with anyone who interrupts the peaceful flow of business, the White house is full of neocons who think war is cool and Iraq would be a pushover, the Iraqis got shafted in the aftermath of the 'war' bit of the war, the absence of strong government allowed all sorts of latent sectarian hatred to surface and politically motivated Islamists the world over saw a chance to gain support by using Iraq and the presence of American troops on Arab soil as a cause to rally round.

How to simplify. Well, for decades the sunni religious minority has dominated the shia majority under Saddam Hussein, and they don't much like giving up that power base. They're backed up by Syria to the west and Saudi $$ from the south.

Next door at the west are shia persians who took in muqtada alsadr until he slipped back into Iraq at the war beginning, to use as much violence as sunnis had against shia muslims, now against sunnis, supported by Iranian shias.

Aaaaaaaand then you have yer sunni-ish alqaida islamofascist terrorists who want to control the world with their warped version of lslam and by the way, control Iraq's oil resources.

That's about the simplest I can sum it up.

You can argue the to$$ out of why it started in the first place forever depending on who you want to believe.
However it will go on for a very long time because We (USA UK) can't leave because we are fighting the insurgents. The insurgents wont leave because they are fighting us.We can't go because they are there, they wont go because we are there.
It's bo££oc$ and with neither government prepared to accept that we are losing (not our troops fault) the end is a long way off.

In a word - religion.

For some reason people persit in needing religion in order to feel that life on earth is worth the efforts, pain and agony. Even stranger is that once people believe in a religion, they seem to feel anyone who has a religion different than theirs is a threat or in need of conversion so that they can be "saved" from the error of their ways. No one can be sure that there is a "god" or if there is, that their religion is one that "god" will approve of.

As far as I know, no one in history has died, met "god" and come back to life with indisputable proof that "god" exists and that "god" will only like people of a particular religion. In spite of all this complete uncertainty, people are so certain their religion is the "right" one that they will kill other people because they don't believe in their religion.

The Soviet Union outlawed religion, but the people in the Soviet Union would not stop going to church and the law against religion became a farce. Religion is apparently "the opiate of the masses". People need religion. Most people are tolerant of other religions but there are a few who feel it is their "duty" to either convert people of other faiths or kill them.

Look at the middle ages and all of the "witches" burned at the stake; the Pope offering a garantee of heaven if a knight went to war and killed the infidels.

More recently, look at how Hitler used the jews to rally people behind him because he blamed the jews for the problems in people lives. Look at the suicide bombers who are willing to kill whoever is nearby to make a religious statement.

To me, it would seem the world would be a better place without religion. Nevertheless, people seem to need it and it is thier right to have it if they so choose. It is not their right to impose it upon others or to commit crimes against other who believe differently.

They cheated in Monopoly and took £400 from the bank when they should have taken £200. George got all upset and then wound Tony up about it, when tony really wasn't that bothered, but Tony is easily led...... then they both ganged up on that other bloke Saddam, and said, hang you cheating git..... and then Saddam's mates all got the @rse.... and started fighting back....

I keep telling people, no good will ever come of playing Monopoly.

But seriously? Have you even been living on this planet?

It's religious tension, its been going on for thousands of years, we really can'y do much to stop it! Muslims not only hate Christians and Jews, well they hate other Muslims enough to blow themselves up to kill them! so no matter how long we are there, without a dictator to keep everything in line, well Muslims will still be blowing up Christians Jews and Muslims...
