I'm assuming that the form that they handed you was the "Free Application for Federal Student Aid," right? This form is your application for a wide variety of Federal Student Aid. It serves as your application for everything from grants (like Pell, SEOG, ACG, and SMART) to loans (like Stafford and Perkins) to Work-Study. Many state agencies also use the form as the application for state-funded grants, so make sure you meet both the institutional AND state filing deadlines.

When you complete the form (online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov), you will be asked what types of aid you are interested in. If you don't want loans or work-study (or either), you can check "no." If you're not sure, you can check "yes" and decline the awards later.

In order to be considered for all types of financial aid, you need to fill out the FAFSA. That will determine your EFC (estimated family contribution). That amount is what is needed to determine what you are eligible for. The lower the number the more you would qualify for.
