The question I would ask: before you confided in this co-worker, had you ever heard them talking trash about someone else?
If you confided in someone who you had heard saying bad things about other people, of who you knew had said bad things about other people, then I think it's your own fault that when you spilled your guts to this person, they talked about you behind your back. When you hear someone talking about others behind your back, you know that you're going to get the same treatment from them. That's why people who badmouth others and who tell the secrets others have told them are bad news and to be avoided.
Unfortunately, most people don't think about that until the bad-mouther starts saying bad things about them. They think that as long as it's only other people who are being bad-mouthed, or whose confidences are being betrayed, it's okay.
Moral of the story: NEVER tell your secrets to or trust anyone who badmouths or betrays other people, because they will surely betray you or badmouth you. And if you don't know someone well enough to know if they are likely to do this, then you don't know them well enough to tell them anything you wouldn't want repeated or used as ammunition against you.

The biggest mistakes I ever made was confiding in co-workers. They always used the info against me. I am retired now so no longer have the problem but I would caution anyone to never, never, never confide anything to a co-worker. It will be used against you.

They all talk trash cuz they all hate work ... the question is.. do you want revenge?
Anonymously annoy him to no end! Create a new e-mail account with his name on yahoo or something and send it to his work e-mail address all day with random messages. You could include how snotty he is, and other mean things he has done, other gossip he has told you; that may straighten him out a bit!
If not, it will drive him crazy having e-mails coming in to him from himself! Use the computers at your local library.

No, it's the same reason why you don't sleep with anyone you work with... People are unpredictable, when they get hurt or feel insecure they'll do anything to gain some form of power.

No, I keep work and private separated. I don't have friends at work, I have friendly and unfriendly co-workers.
