Cholera is an acute bacterial infection of the small intestine. It is characterized by severe diarrhea and vomiting, muscular cramps, dehydration and the depletion of electrolytes. The disease is spread by water and food that have been contaminated by the feces of other persons previously infected. Some complications may include circulatory collapse, cyanosis, destruction of kidney tissue, and metabolic acidosis. If left untreated, the rate of mortality is about 50%. There is a vaccine for it though and is available for people travelling to areas of high infection rate. Some preventive methods include drinking only bottled water and eating only cooked foods.
