I doubt any disobedient child ever had to be stoned under those conditions! Ithink it was a way of preventing a child to get into such a state. (By the way, we are talking about a "child" who has become a lazy drunkard, etc. so he's not that small!)

In verse 21 you find the answer. To put evil away from among you; and all Isreal shall hear and fear. I'm sure that there wasn't many rebellious Kids because of this law. Maybe a few but the rest of the kids learned quickly.

I am not a believer, but I am lost as to the question. this passage establishes the commandment of honor thy mother and thy father. It is used to show that breaking of the commandments will result in harsh penalties.
Remember the old testament as well as the new were used as a way to dictate law to the masses. Fear is a wonderful motivator when the population is uneducated. The bible ceased to be an affective medium of population control when literacy became the norm instead of illiteracy.

I think you need to re-read it. God is simply giving moses instructions as what to do. And these are the laws they must obey if a situation should arise in this manner. those are the laws set before Moses. and he is just relaying them to his people. If you read Deut. from the beginning. maybe you will understand the reasoning behind the law.

Do we now limit God's ability?
God set forth the laws in the Old Testament and therefore allowed the results from his laws.
Yes, God is love, but in the past has struck down people and whole nations. If you create something, do you not also have the ability to destroy it??

I think it is better to get the general idea in the bible than to analyze specific sections sections like this one; many sections in the bible seem to contradict one another.
God never sanctions killing any one, even if a section of the bible seems to suggest it. These books were complied by human beings, who were not infallible about their interpretations of God's messages thousands of years ago.

it refers to Jewish law that places the son under the father for life... and in this case dose not refer to a child... the "rebelious one" is an adult who has violated a law that carries the death penalty.

Maybe to God death isn't as dramatic of thing, maybe from Gods perspective death is simply moving a soul to a different place.

Children are to obey their parents, failure to obey is rebellion, and rebellion is the same as witch craft.
