Just like most people have said, swearing has its own place, and is mainly used to accentuate attention to something. However, there are some places where you will stick out like a sore thumb if you don't swear. I, personally, never swear in public, but I play hockey, and frequently swear in the dressing room. It's a very touch-and-go situation; if you have to wonder if it's appropriate, it's probably not.

In most cases swearing is inappropriate at any age. However by the age of 18 you've earned the right. Personally swearing should be use as an attention getter, to punctuate a point. Swearing loses it's shock value if you do it all of the time.

Swearing is only appropriate in a situation where you have been physically injured to the point where no reasonable person would blame you for the words you let slip.
Example: you are working as a cashier and you have just inadvertently slammed your hand in the cash register drawer. No one is going to blame you for anything you say in this situation as you extract your smashed hand and the tears are rolling down your cheeks. (Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it.)

Well, I definitely wouldn't swear in front of young kids... most children don't (or shouldn't) know the meanings of most of those words, and if your child is learning how to talk, guess what will pop out of his mouth if he hears that word frequently? I think it's inappropriate to swear around children under 10. After that, I think it's inappropriate in church, or if you're at some fancy event. I usually don't notice if someone swears in public, like at a store or restaurant or elsewhere, unless he is either yelling, or it's every other word! It really bothers me to see a parent cussing at his child, and I really don't like hearing it word after word after word... but I honestly don't care if I hear the occassional slip out of someone's mouth.

Swearing, like all words, has it's place. As long as there are not impressionable children around you and you are in the presence of people whom you trust and accept you for who you are, then swearing is a form of expression.
