there is no difference between men and women having tattoos. it really annoys me when people say that men can have them but it is trashy, ugly or gross for women to have them. you are 19 years old and legally can make the decision to get them regardless of what your mother wants. so to those people your mom should let them know that you are not a child and you can do what you want with your own body.
as for the people who are griping at you for getting tattoos, remind them that your body is yours and unless you try to put tattoos on THEIR bodies without their permission, they should mind their own business!

grrr! ignorant pushy people make me aggravated!

If people think of you as crazy and less than normal just because you have a tattoo, then in my opinion they're not worth your friendship. That's a sad thing that someone would tarnish your reputation over a tattoo. Some of the best and smartest people in the world have tattoos, but nobody tarnishes their reputation. Stick with the friends that stand by your side no matter what you do! Those are real friends worthy of your friendship! Your mom should stick up for you as well. You are your own person, but by no means are you any less of a person because of a tattoo! Good luck♥

I think that if a female wants a tattoo...she should be able to get one. I also think though that ANYBODY that gets one should REALLY think about what they want before they get them.

I know too many people that just got them because they thought they were cool. Now they regret the tattoos they have because they did not put any thought into it.

I too have 3 tattoos but I thought about mine for years. Placement, design... and I do not regret for one second getting them.

I am 23 years old. I am an Anthropologist. My undergraduate thesis was on women's right to body modify (tattoo, pierce, even suspensions ...) In our society there are so many pressures still from the powers that be to have control over the minds and the bodies of women. Women are oppressed, judged, and marginalized for the looks of their bodies in our culture. Body modification allows women to take control over the rules impressed upon their bodies, and create a space with their own skin to show self reflexive strength. Irving Goffman wrote in the "The presentation of self in everyday life" that we are all doing things consciously and subconsciously to preform for those around us, that are clothes are costumes, our words are speeches, and our actions are planned. I believe that a tattooed body is just an extension of that which is within. My research showed that women's choices to body modify were largely attributed to the want to feel aesthetically and emotionally, strong and beautiful.
Women should do what ever the want with their bodies, so should men, so long as they aren't endangering others.
Tattooing is just another way to express yourself, anyone who tells you to quiet your own voice is trying to shout over you anyway.

Why let other people dictate on how you should live your life? I personally love tattoos...a display of art as well as your own personality. If other people can't handle that, you know what I say to them?...$#@&% Off! If they can't deal with it then why waist your time trying to please them?

It's your life and your body therefore it's your choice. Sence you are only 19 right now..later in life you will better understand my statements when you get older and no longer feel the influence of your high school peers.

You have one life to live..and that is your own. You and only you control your own choices. Let your heart and soul speak for yourself and no one else. I don't think i can get anymore dirrect then that. Good luck to ya!

It's bad enough they yell at you, but your mother too??? People....jeeeez.
I have 3 and plan on many more. I love them....I have this body and I want to decorate. Next time someone gives you a rude comment about them tell them you'd like for them to keep their rude comments to themselves....it's not their body so it's none of their business and it's not nice to be so damn rude =) Nicely though.
I love tats on men and women as long as it's not a racist or prejudice tattoo and can easily offend people. If they could offend certain people, I say be respective and cover them for time being.

I'm reminded of something that happened to a friend & fellow engineer.

Said friend, myself & others are on a business trip. She has a beatiful pair of sleeves, very floral/idyllic & well done. We were in the hotel's bar getting a beer & having a smoke (her; I don't smoke) after a long day of setting up our booth for a computer convention; we had been having a conversation about tattoos. She was planning on getting more, and I was in my exploration state & didn't have one yet. I got tired and headed up to my room.

After I left, a large (read: obese) fellow who'd been setting up a booth near ours waddles over and tells her she's "ruining her body", pointing at her arms. She pretends he's pointing to her cigarette and retorts: "You're probably right; I should really quit", downs her beer, extinguishes her cigarette in his drink and walks off.

Sadly, I missed the exhange, but the look on his face the following day was priceless. She wouldn't tell any of us about it until lunch, constantly flashing an evil grin at the guy all morning.

Moral of the story: don't let the small minded tell you what to do. Often enough, they're jealous of your free spirit and courage, and want to drag you down into the mire of their joyless existence. If anyone is going face-first into the muck, make sure it's them.

Just because you're a girl doesn't mean you shouldn't get tattoos! You are over the age of 18 and have the right to do whatever you want to your body. Tell them to shut up!

i have three as well and i'm 19.
my husband has i think 7.. big and small.
he loves it on me and i plan on getting a whole lot more.
if you feel comfortable with it it shouldn't matter.
i'm a make up artist, so it doesn't really matter how many i have.
but you if you're looking into having a really tidy career, you should cover them up. it doesn't look to great during an interview.
do whatever it is that you want, its your body and you're over 18.
plus, i'm sure you've thought of the consequences and the process you have to go through if you don't want them anymore.
but careful, it hurts way more to get them removed than to get them in the first place.
