I know that he was quirky and had some strange idiosyncrasies (who doesn't?) and that his teachers said that he would never amount to anything (just goes to show what people with degrees know), but I had never heard he couldn't tie his own shoes. Interesting if that's true. He was truly a character, a very smart one!

He didn't learn to tie his shoes until he was almost a teenager. By all accounts, he had severe dyslexia. He couldn't read very well and was terrible at spelling. His school teachers apparently thought he was mentally handicapped, but his mother understood his dyslexia (an amazing feat, considering nobody had a clue was dyslexia was back then) and extensively tutored him, especially at music. He excelled at the violin, and would improvise music. He started improvising his equations the same way he improvised music. His equations follow a rhythm, just like music.

He never knew his own phone number though and reasoned that he wouldn't have to bother because he never called himself. If he needed to call home, he'd look it up in the phone book!

No, those are embellishments on the idea that even geniuses can sometimes not have a lick of common sense.

He was a rather peculiar dresser though.
