This really depends on the maltese you've already got. How does the dog you have do with other dogs? Can you take him on a leash to a dog park or a PetSmart and just let him walk around meeting other dogs? Has he ever experienced you bringing another dog into the house (aka his territory) yet? And as for the adopted dog, does it have issues?

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that you're going to have to be dealing with both dogs now, and both their issues. If the dog you have has a problem with strangers, don't bring in a new dog. If the dog you want has an issue that's going to take lots of extra time and effort to correct, you may not want to take on that responsibility while also taking on the responsibility of getting the two dogs acclimated. All my animals are rescues, so I know how easy it is to take one home because you feel bad for it. But if you're not ready for that responsibility and commitment, then let someone who is better prepared take the dog. If you get in too deep and have to give the dog away or back to the shelter, it's going to be a lot more traumatic for that dog and yours than if you had just let him spend a few more weeks in the shelter waiting for someone else. As much as you can, know what you're getting into! The dog you want to adopt is probably in the shelter because its previous owner didn't do this.

Good luck

I don't know why not. Maltese tend to get along with their own breed no matter how old they are. The older one might tell the younger one when she has had enough playing and growl at the baby. That is O.K. I have two Maltese and they argue and fight like two little kids. But they love each other too. They could never live without each other.
They are also a breed that loves having another one to live with. They will compliment each other.

It depends on the dog. The 10 year old one i mean. If it is possible for you to enterduce the young one to the older one a few times before you bring it home, that would be a idea. The older 'dog may not like other dogs and may take it out on the little
one. If the older one is used to dogs than you should have no problems. Make sure your dog is socialized as well.
Hope this helps
