Not necessarily. When I worked at places that served alcohol in CA, we only accepted state issued forms of id (State ID card, Driver's License) and passports. Management could make exceptions, but it usually wasn't worth the liquor license to risk it.
It would be smartest to travel with a passport, the actual passport, as places with strict policies will not accept a random foreign ID.

I know that in Texas it is a requirement to show a state ID to purchase alcohol, no matter what your age - a passport is not sufficient. It might be the same in California.

confident you should use your passport as identity to purchase alcohol in California - so long because it shows which you're over 21. What the criminal age is to purchase alcohol is Germany is completely beside the point. it is unlawful to purchase alcohol in California until you're 21. Richard

I don't know about a foreign driver's license, but perhaps a government issued id like a passport should work without issue.

most of us don't know what the real id's look like when they are foreign and therefore alot of stores will not honor a foreign id. if a seller cannot identify the id he has a right to turn it away.

A foreign passport will work. US Citizens have to have a form of state government issued identification- most bars and liquor stores will accept foreign passports but not US passports.

I don't know but this reminds me of one time I was in college. I was dating a guy from Norway, he was 21 and I was 20. We went to the ABC store and they carded him. Well, his b-day is June 12 and in US that would be indicated as 6/12/xx but since his ID was Norwegian, the date was presented as 12/6/xx and he was refused the sale because it wasn't December yet.
