how often can you get it prescribed?

What's the old saying....you can ask. You'll have better success by having a recorded history of anxiety or the need for a relaxant. I occasionally have used Benzodiazepines for managing migraine headaches.
Just be darn careful doing anything needing quick reflexes.

If you think you want it to help with anxiety, then you should go to your primary doctor first and tell him you're feeling anxious and explain how it feels for you and (importantly) how anxiety is getting in the way of you being able to manage every day life.
If you have a psychiatrist, go there and tell them the same thing. If you don't and anxiety is a real problem get a referral to one.
Tell them the problems and let them suggest the xanax or ativan or whatever they think will best help you.

The way to get help for a health problem is to talk to the doctor about how you're feeling and have the doctor prescribe what he thinks is best in the dosage he finds appropriate. He will tell you how often to take it and for how long.

You can try, but walking through the door and asking for xanax is going to raise red flags with any competent doctor. "Drug-seeking behavior."

I just depends................if you have like a history of anxiety or something like that he may order it for you. Some docs just plain WILL NOT give it out. and the some will??????????????? Like i have one doc who will give me soma and xanex and another that will NOT order either...........every doctor is different and have their own opinions?????????????????? It's crazy!!!!! PLUS you need to be very careful w/xanex. One time this dr. ordered the bars (2mg) xanex 3 times a day and i took them 3 times a day like a dummy. Well, i quit one day and went into a seizure BIG time. I DID NOT know that you have to stair step down off of them or that could happen??????????????? So now i only take 1 or 2 (1mg) xanex a day..........that's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
