Microsoft has discontinued support for Windows 98, and Windows Me, which leaves me unable to download any spyware now!!! {just great!!!!} So now I have to upgrade to XP. Is there any other way to get spyware protection? Is having ME now useless?

Unfortunately, ME was useless from the day it was released.
Between the bugs it had, and the fact that it was released after Windows 2000 came out, for pretty much no good reason, ME was one of the most dismal failures in microsoft's stable.
You can try a program like spybot or adaware SE... they may continue to work on those obsolete OSes.
You don't need to upgrade to XP, but I would recommend at least upgrading to 2000. You should be able to fine a a bargain basement clearance of windows 2000 on eBay or something.

Dear reader,
On Win ME - its always been useless. The problems are so endless MS will soon stop offering support for it. Win XP is definitely the way to go. You can find it cheap on Pricegrabber.
On the anti-spyware there are some good freeware packages available (why buy when its free?....): I use adaware and ccleaner- both from downloads.com.

I used Windows 98 for quite some time after it was discontinued from support. The great thing about it was that most viruses on the net, which were looking for Windows XP users, were bypassing me.

The real, honest answer to your question is that Windows ME has been useless since it was released. It is crap...you should have gotten rid of it years ago.
