See below from website
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

You don't *NEED TO* have a passport to drive through right now, but it will make the transition at the Canadian and American check points much, much quicker.
My dad, his 3 brothers, male cousins, etc. make an annual trek from Minnesota to Canada every year and this spring they're all bringing passports to speed up going through customs.
And once you get a passport, it's good for 10 years!

Right now you do not need a passport to drive into Canada. You will need one next year. If you are going to fly out of Canada back to the US you do need a passport now.

Right now you only have to have a passport to fly to Canada, but by 2008 you will have to have it to drive, walk, fly, take a train etc. They recommend that you get one now just to be on the safe side.

No, at this time you do not have to have a passport to drive, only to fly. Last I heard, 2008 will be the cutoff date. All you need now is birth certificate and picture id( drivers licsense)

particular. that's all you like whilst youpersistent. you basically want a passport to fly. at last you will want a passport, despite the fact that it replaced into think to be next 365 days, and that they have began making a gaggle of bulletins to postpone those adjustments.

I believe you do need birth certificare, and another thing, is if you have a DWI or DUI in any of the States, you will be denied access to HAIL CANADA!!!!!!! I knew some people in college that all went to canada but one had to drive all the way back home because they wouldnt let him in because of his DWI

living in the Detroit area we've been effected by this new rule. Driving from US to canada you do not have to show pass port, but have to show it to come back into the US.
