Keep the biggest most expensive pieces like a sofa, neutral in color. You can always add bright colors in drapes, pillows or dining room chair seats, rugs and accent pieces. (they are easy to cover)

I would spend the most on the sofa, other things can be attractive and less expensive. This way in a few years when you are tired of them, you won't be so concerned. Be certain the sofa is at least 72 inches or 6 feet long in the sitting area. This is for those truly necessary Saturday Naps. Make certain it is a surface that will clean easily.

Buy flexible pieces. End tables or chests that COULD be night stands, or sit side by side as a side board in the dining room.

If your place is small, be sure to get things with drawers or doors for storage. Make everything serve more than one purpose.

Good Luck shopping, it is a challenge.

Keep it to the scale of the room. Large pieces may cramp the room and look funny. Purchase pieces that have more than one function! Buy a trunk or storage cubes for the coffee table, end tables with shelves or storage of some sort. You may want to splurge on the sofa and get a small sofa sleeper. Instant guest bedroom. They make overstuffed chairs for two--smaller than a couch--that fold out. Their really cute. Most of all, make sure the furniture is you or it doesn't matter how functionable it is--you won't like it. Its your place, make it home.
