Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do. If she's not willing to cooperate, the school can't do anything for you. It sucks, but that's the way it works. You should talk to your mom about the financial aid process. She might have questions about it. Maybe she is worried that if she fills it out, she will be obligated to pay for your education. My dad was reluctant to fill it out because he said he wasn't going to pay for my college education, and thus he didn't understand why colleges had to know his financial status. I told him that he wasn't obligated to pay, but if I was going to get any help at all through grants or loans, he had to fill it out or else I'd be screwed. I suggest you tell your mom what I told my dad. Calmly explain to her that you didn't make the rules, but for you to benefit, you guys have to cooperate and fill out the FAFSA. Why don't you take her to the FAFSA website, and have her check out the FAFSA website http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and have her check out the FAQ'S? Print out a FAFSA and show her what questions are on it so she's not as overwhelmed.

First of all, it's not "free money". You are applying for Financial Aid. A loan, in which you have to pay back.
Secondly, maybe your mother has reservations about the whole "aid" thing. Some people feel like if they have to get financial aid that they are "poor" or "needy". Most parents only want the best for their child and that they want to believe that they can support their child through school without financial aid. However, I would have to say about 80% of students are on financial aid. There's no shame in it.
However, on the flip side, maybe she doesn't want to get into a binding loan contract if she doesn't feel you will "follow through". Just because you may decide to leave school or whatever, you still have to repay the loan. Could that be the case?
Thirdly, right now, you are under legal guardianship to your mother. She claims you on her taxes. Therefore, your father cannot help you on the financial aid (theoretically). However, what is the financial aid? It is basically a loan application. It will then look at the financial standing of your guardian. If needed, the government will loan you money to complete school. Maybe, just maybe, your dad can basically "co-sign" for this loan. I don't know exactly how that works, but ask your school.

no, if your mom claims you, it is she whos info is wanted. there may be a loophole around this, but i dont know of one. call your financial aid office and ask someone there.

you will need to find funding on your own or pay for a community college to get started.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more... they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying. most have a 1 to 2 page application and most require an essay.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

heres a link with a HUGE amount of some available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.

Sorry. If you live with your mom you have to use her information. Your school counselor could help you with it. Mom doesn't necessarily have to fill it out, but you will need the information from her tax returns. Is there a reason she does not want to fill it out?

Can you get your HS counselor to talk with her? She is going to prevent you from going to college and bettering yourself if she continues. Colleges are not allowed to give waivers for lack of parent cooperation.
