We took in a stray cat and her 5 kittens. We kept two of the kittens, one male and one female. The female was always quiet except when she was alone. Yesterday we had the male neutered and ever since he got home she just hisses and growls at him and is just mean towards him. They always got along perfectly before. Is there any advice as to how to help them get along again or how long it might be until they do get along. Also, they tend to meow a lot, is there anything to do to help stop the meowing? They're both about five 1/2 months old. Thank you.

She smells blood on him from his operation. In the wild this might have been a threat to the rest of the group - if a nearby animal could pick up the smell and sense a weak or injured animal. He will do the same to her when she is neutered. You should keep them apart during this healing phase (especially since its a lot harder on the female). Once it's healed up, everything will be back to normal. Our very close kittens did this too - animals pick at the "weakest link" even when they are close relatives - that's just the way of the animal kingdom.

I just got my female back from the vet as well. You just have to let the smell of the vet go away before letting him near your female. She thinks he is another cat and doesn't like him. They will go back to being buddies in a few days.

Now meowing is just something cats do, but when they get older, they tend to lessen the meows. Just be patient and they will calm down and settle in.

Well your male cat probably smells like the vet clinic, which is an unfamiliar smell to your female cat. I also have 2 cats brother and sister and they have thier moods with each other, somedays they fight, some days they nap together. Just give them a few days and I'm sure they will be back to normal.

My cats did that!
they think that the other cat is a threat to them but they'll soon get over it, noe my cats laze by the fire together and lick each other all the time. In fact their both in this room with me now.

Try not to stroke one and not the other when they are both in the room with you or they'll get jealous and hate each other more

good luck

xx
