First off you want to ask yourself If you want to break up with them, because if it is a problem or an issue you can resolve I would do that then go for the big sha-bang. If you truly can't stand them or you just are bored then take them somewhere quiet to talk and be honest. Tell them that things are different and you too had your fun but it is time to move on. Either two thing will happen: 1) they may also recognize the impending break up and agree with you and you can be friends (rarely ever happens) or 2) they are going to get mad. But you have to stick with your guns because seriously if you are not happy then there is no reason to be in the relationship. I am not a good person when it comes to breaking up with girls. I try the 'fade away' where I get really "busy" and eventually stop hanging out with them and the approach me about not being there for them and I tell them well I guess we should break up. Depending on what you want post relationship depends on how to break up. You want to be friends you try to do it very nice and with all sincerity. Looking to maybe hook up with them after, be mean but stop ignoring after a week or so they will come back, they always do. Or if you never want to see them again, then let them have it and peace out. You don't have to ever see them again if you don't want to.

i pulled the "i need to get my life on track" excuse. like i told him that i needed to focus on school and work and i wouldn't really have time to see him and i didnt want to hurt him that way. so i gave him the iniciative of getting back together but that will never happen. just to keep him in spirits

Just do it chances are he doesn't care about you or he would not have hurt you, you can move on trust me.
