i live in florida and a county /state court judge which i am sure was a criminal court justice and sent people to jail has been in the news as a judge in a high profile civil court case (wrongful death) is this standard practice or must he have changed the type of judge he is (former criminal, present civil court)

Because justices have a vast knowledge and education in law...they will hear both criminal and civil cases. This is a very "normal" thing.

The court does not separate judges based upon the type of case.

Certain types of cases are heard by certain "levels" of a court however. For instance, traffic violations and misdemeanor cases are normally heard by municipal and district court judges. Whereas, felony cases are normally heard by circuit court judge.
