What really bothers me about this, is it is just one more loss of our freedoms. Smoking is LEGAL and yet smokers are treated like criminals. People who see this as a victory need to remember this if something they enjoy doing comes under fire like this has. There are things that can be done, such as good ventilation etc, but there are those who do not want that, they are not willing to compromise at all. It is scary to me that so many are willing to celebrate another loss of our freedoms, they can;t seem to see or understand it for what it is.

I am a smoker but I defend non smokers rights to clean air.
On the other hand why not make special smoking rooms in pubs (not "smoking areas" which are a total waste of time) then people can actually choose whether they wish to go in or not.
I hope the pubs and restaurants lose millions over this and the off licenses make millions when people choose to stay at home and drink rather than be told where they are and aren't allowed to enter.
By the way a small garden at the rear of the pub with a patio heater for the lepers to sit and smoke will not be enough Im afraid!

I agree with you, the reduction in people smoking is quite drastic and this has been achieved by health education and crippling taxation. It was recently reported that 40 years ago 70% of the population smoked whereas now the figure is 25%.
I presume the reason 24 hour drinking is now the norm is to compensate for the tax loss to the exchequer in the reduction in tobacco sales.
It would seem that this is simply another big brother type of intrusion into our lives although I am sure the political reply would be the usual empty rhetoric we continuously hear from our politicians.

as a child i was subjected to smoke in pubs clubs and numerous other places
i did not have a choice
i think its great to ban it I've never wanted to look like a complete pratt with a burning cigarette in my hand because i cant face life without it each day
as for those who say its enjoyable wake up your an addict with no control over your body anymore
I've never found slowly killing my body to be an enjoyable experience and don't want to either
why put on deodorant and posh perfume if all your going to do is smell of players no6 all day, save your money girls!
cleaner air for all!!!!

This new law will cost the non smokers dearly..The Government make so much money from the sale of cigarettes and tobacco, they'll have to shift that loss somewhere..Which is probably why they are now considering the new taxing on travel !!It's got now't to do with saving the planet..

I agree with you, although I missed what your question was.

I think it would be much fairer to leave the choice as to whether smoking is allowed with the owner of the property be it pub restaurant etc.

There are already several pubs taking the plunge and going smoke free so it must be commercially viable for landlords who don't want smoke in their pubs without the need to legislate to make all landlords ban smoking.
