senator blutarsky was the pledgemaster for delta tau kai at faber university.
After eight years of pre-med, and his famous "pearl harbor speech" that encouraged the deltas to destroy the faber parade, he (dressed as a pirate) avoided capture by the authorities and kidnapped his future wife Mandy Peppridge in the daring escape. He went on to become a U.S. Senator.

since people aren't reading between the lines- I'm making a reference to the great "are high kicks really that effective" debate and want to see where people on yahoo answers stand.
Personally I think high kicks are high risk because of the way you open yourself up. a mid level strike is IMO the highest you should use.

1 Throw the midgets up in the air, then kick.
2 Change your instructor.
3 Ok you want serious? I can't imagine ever having to use a high kick in a real life situation unless you count the time at the Poll Tax Riots in London where I had to do a jumping spinning back kick to a policeman on horseback. If you don't think high kicks are worth learning does that mean all weapons training is out also cause when are you going to be carrying rice flails in the local bar? I don't do any weapons training thru choice but doesn't mean I don't respect people who do.

The only high kick I would remotely consider would be a front leg side kick to the face. It's a little quicker than a spin hook or something like that. While I love TKD and it's kicks, I know real world application for most of them would be difficult to say the least.
Right now I am still healing, so my once high wheel kicks would be perfect for taking out midgets! Bring them on!

Hey, we all like a bit of smartassery from time to time. Takes your mind off the "Who would win..." and "Which is best for me" postings.
ANYWAY, high kicks do have their place. Granted that usually that place is in a nice, safe tourny during Kata competetion. However, if a guy is holding his hands very low, and you have the ability...crack that kick in his dome. Personally, I can throw a high front kick or crescent kick VERY fast and I land with ot often. However, on the street, I would MUCH prefer to blast the guy with a mid-level side kick...or crunch his knee first. After he's doubled over it's a LOT easier to kick him in the head.

High kicks are for show and ego. Sure, there are some young, gifted people who can effectively kick as high as they want but it is not the norm and it is not something I encourage for the average person taking martial arts.
I do not bring my kicks above the floating ribs. If I want to go to the head I either punch or bring the target into my "kicking zone".
BTW, gang of midgets!! LOL!
You have a good sense of humor.

You can see a lot of high kicks at Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, and Karate tournaments. It's easier to knock people out than using punches. Amateurs thinks it sucks because they can't aim and doesn't really know the right timing.
You're fighting a midget right?
So it should be easier to kick them in the head.
I believe you were expecting answers like you don't need high kicks.
Wrong. It's the other way around. Amateurs "can't use" high kicks.

It all depends on the attacker. a good Axe kick or an outward cresent work just fine. If Your kicking too high, try getting Your head around first, so You can see Your target before committing Your KICK. First You see it then You Hit it.

I'm gonna agree with you on this one, high kicks aren't that effective. In fact, a high kick throws the kicker out of balance; which is really funny when you catch one and flip 'em. Only certain high kicks are actually worth using and those kicks are close and sneaky.
While kicks suck, they are extremely funny to watch.
Very practical when there aren't that many 9'6" attackers out there. Let's face it, if someone's that tall. they are probably in the NBA. Last time I checked, Shaq tries his best people out.

I used to believe in the great head kick hype. but for a long time I have dismissed it as a test of flexibility.
I go for no higher than the waist.
I aim for legs.
the shortest and most energy efficient kick would be low.
high licks demand high energy, and more time than a low kick.
the head can move faster to avoid them than the torso.
high kicks are easier to see coming than low licks.
low kicks can be deceptive, especially if you faint a high attack (say a punch) and swing into the low kick.
fancy fails where simple succeeds.
it is easier to recover from a low kick attempt with follow though combos, than high kicks.
high kicks alter your balance significantly, while using low kicks you remain grounded.
everyone expects attacks to the upper body (mostly head punches), and the surprise of low attacks can significantly swing the fight in your favor.
using high kicks in a street fight shows to the opponent you havent fought on the street before.
and the bottom line is :
tournaments and trophys do not equal fight capability. they are two different sides to the same coin, but none the less different strategies are required.
and low kicks kill midgets! hell yeah!

Seems to me that the higher you kick on the street, the bigger the risk of someone grabbing your leg, ducking under it or attacking your other leg there is. I would stay with mid section and lower. Stay with what is safe and is effective. There aren't any pads down on the ground outside the school.
