Neither can be tempted

2007-02-21 06:44:20 · answer #1 · answered by Dr Universe 7 · 1 1

He was fully human, remember, as well as being fully God at the same time, so he could be tempted by Satan in the desert (is that the time ur talking about?) but he had the streangth to resist.

We can also see that He was fully human when he becomes angry when he saw how people abused the church grounds for gambeling, selling etc. And when He cried to God and asked that if there was another way for Him to help the poeple other than dying on the cross, that He could take that instead.

So, just as humans can be tempted, i guess Jesus could have been tempted aswell, the diff. between us and Him is though, that He resisted but we dont always do.

It was the "flesh" aspect of Jesus that led Him to temptation--which He overcame, to show us that it COULD be done, after all. It is part of the reason God came to us in this form...not just to put forth a blood sacrifice to atone for our sins, but so He could really relate better the struggles we humans go through as we battle the flesh, to better take care of the spirit.
But you are right, in that God the Father cannot be tempted: He is Holy, and incapable of being corrupted. Jesus had a body, which put demands upon Him, which He dealt with appropriately, without sin. But I said that already, so I'll shut up now.

Jesus was two natures. God and human. The human side could be tempted.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Romans 9:4 the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. 5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all.

Galatians 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law.

Hebrews 2:14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for[f]the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

Jesus was also human while at the same time being God. The human part was able to be tempted and He had to through temptation so that He can sympathize with ours

Depends on how you define "tempted."

A) Tempted = "another party trying to persuade you to do something wrong"

or B) Tempted = "having a strong desire to do something wrong."

Jesus went through A, but not B. B is the one that cannot apply to God. But of course another party can "try" to persuade anybody!

Because Jesus has a human nature united to his divinity|

In having had a mortal human nature on earth, he had all the natural suseptibilities and weaknesses that are intrinsic to human nature|

This is true, although with him, there was no *internal* disorder, such as out of control passions| Also with that, he was never even sick with a cold| But he did suffer from what was imposed *externally* such as injustice he witnessed or pain caused by injury on his person|

He was only tempted in the sense that his human nature had natural inclinations that tended to pull towards their natural objects - there was a sex pull, a hunger pull, a pull to the beauty that he could see, and a natural aversion to pain|

But these were all regulated (and perfectly too) by his human will which was united to his divine will|

The only real difference between Jesus and every man that has ever lived or will live, is Jesus was perfect and completely without sin. He was a true Son of God.
