Very important!! Muscles only grow as they heal, not when they are being worked. Pretty much any personal trainer will tell you that over-training is the biggest pitfall for weight lifters. Go to www.bodybuilding.com and do some reading. If you are going to put in all of that effort you may as well get the results you deserve by doing it right. You can workout 5 days in a row as long as you are not working the same muscle more than twice a week. The site above has some great routines for all levels. It is also important to not do the same routine over and over. The muscles get used to what you are doing rather quickly so you have to change the routine periodically to "shock" the muscles into growing again.

yes it is necessary to rest in between workoust as far as muscles go. (that also depends on how hard your working your muscles) You can work out five days in a row just change up muscle groups. Working out breaks your muscles down. The recovery part is where the muscles gets strength and size

Depends on what you want to do. Endurance works on every day workouts. Muscle mass growth needs 48 hrs between workouts to allow your body to regrow those muscle fibers that were damaged during your last workout. That's why we get kinda sore after a hard workout, some fibers are torn. These have to heal before we stress them again which causes our body to grow new fibers and make existing fibers bigger and stronger. 3 sets of 16 reps each with as heavy a weight as possible every 48 hrs. That will bulk you up.

If you are working them at high enough intensity and your goal is muscular hypertrophy than 5 days a week is too much. You can get huge at 3 days a week. At most you should do 4 once you are conditioned enough. Only people on the juice can do that many days of lifting and grow. The stimulus is lifting weights, but the body grows when it is resting.

I have met with a personal trainer and he told me specifically not to do any kind of weightlifting on a daily basis, but every other day is fine. Your muscles need a day to rest and repair themselves between workouts.
On the other hand, cardio is fine to do every day.

Depends on your mode of exercise. If you're lifting weights you should do it every other day but if it's just cardio or pilates, running, etc. then everyday is ok according to the books I've read.

Extremely important!!! Your muscles don't grow in the gym, they grow at rest. If you overwork your muscles you won't see good results.
