It is important.

But it is ceasing to do...to stop often gives people the image of putting in effort to stop. Actually, you want to let go and cease doing...that requires no continued effort (as in doing).

Analogy in bike riding...you cease pedalling and coast to a stop - instead of hitting the brakes.
