I want to run Linux from a CD that I have just burned; computer starts up but msg appears "Windows needs to know what program created it . . . etc". I understood that Linux would run independently of Windows and am reluctant to mix the two OS. Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Sail 7915,
First you need to partition the hard drive to run both OS's.. Not on the same drive, and you will need a boot manager to tell the PC which OS to boot first, or at least give you the boot option to pick which one you want to boot to. Good luck

Good questions!
First, there are two Kubuntu Cd's. One is the "live" version which will run off your CD rom. (Windows will not be disturbed with this one, because you are running off the CD rom, not installing a new OS). Solution: If you have the live CD, turn your computer off, put in the Kubuntu live CD, and reboot. Then you can run kubuntu live. Remember you MAY have to change the BIOS to boot from the CDrom drive first.
If it is NOT the live Kubuntu, but the install CD, then you can do a couple things:
1. Put in another hard drive and install the Kubuntu on it, leaving your Windows alone.
2. LOGICALLY, you can partition your hard drive to dual boot Windows and Kubuntu. Go to www.kubuntu.org for more information on this.
