He made a decision not to fight in the Vietnam war and lost three years of participating in his sport. This would not be a decision of a cocky athlete. He was not just any athlete. He was the greatest boxer in the history of boxing.

Ali pointed out the unfair practices of people not being served in restaurants because of the color of their skin and any other unfair act that was going on in the U.S. back in the 60's. He was a hero to some people other people hated him because he stood for something alot of people wanted to hide or take away. The right of freedom.

Muhammad Ali was alot more than an athlete except he just happened to be the best at what he did.

we all try to see things as 100% but people vacillate so one can be a hero and a cocky athlete

Muhammad was cocky with all his rhymes on the round he would win by - that is what made him an exciting heavy weight champ. Yep he was handsome and that two played into the logic that we like good looks to win out as evil is ugly. Ali also had speed and boxing skills - all the above came across as a cocky champ - but boy did he back it up

Now this hero Muhammad Ali who was also a two bit boxer - defied Uncle Sam from entering the draft. He stood up and gave up a finical rewarding career to protest an unjust war. Not many of us give it all up to stand for what is right.

In my opinion he was over rated and cocky. Dont get me wrong he was agreat fighter, but the best ever, I dont think so. He had 5 losses. He told everyone he was the greatest and made such a comotion about it all the time every one started believeing it. It was like he was brainwashing everyone by saying it over and over again. Also everyone makes him out to be some hero by not going to the war and taking a stand. the only reason he didnt go was cause he was afraid. he used the excuse it was against his religion to fight. Meanwhile he made millions of usa dollars fighting in the ring. But he couldnt go to war and help usa counrty. If he was so great he wouldnt have to keep saying it, everyone else would have said it. In my opinion the top 2 heavyweights of all time are Rocky Marciano and George Foreman. Also Joe Lewis.

Why would you call him a hero? He is a athlete. It is sad that athletes are the only roll models our children have. He is
not a hero. He is some jock who was good at boxing. Hero?
