you can put in the microwave with a cup of water to get vsome steam going. that always works for me.

To keep it from happening again, add a cracker or a piece of bread to it before putting the brown sugar away.

You can't. It's best to store brown sugar in the freezer and take as needed. It defrosts in about 4 seconds.
