I went through this about 4 days ago so I know exactly what you are asking about.

I honestly never had any luck with travel agents. They may have some set aside deals but they never match up with what I had in mind. They just research travelocity and expedia for you and call you with the results.

I use travelocity or expedia for ideas and to get price quotes. If you are willing to go on some of the dates that they offer a really great package for then do it. But in my experience all the packages were for March and I didn't want to go that soon.

I gather all my ideas and quotes from the travel agents and online sites and then just book directly with the airline or whatever. I got my flights through ATA with a connection through Phoenix. I'm not sure if this will work for you from TN but its worth a shot.

Good luck.

Be careful using expedia and travelocity. They have hidden rules so read the fine print. We used Travelocity a couple years ago and I got sick and couldn't make the trip. Well they had a 24 hour cancellation policy and I called in 1 hour late and they tried to stick us with the hotel bill. It was a battle but in the end my credit card company sided with me. Check the Paper travel section. You can really find some good deals. If you know a good travel agent they will never stick it to you and they do all the leg work.

You can always save $$ by booking online vs. using a travel agent. In fact, travel agencies are becoming obsolete because of internet travel websites. The best website by far for finding the best fares is WORLDVENTURES. They have technology that searches for the lowest rates for air, hotel, car and cruise trip packages on over 100 major travel websites all in one click. That way you don't have to skip back and forth between Expedia, Travelocity, etc. trying to find the best fare. PowerSearch does it for you, so you not only save money, you save time in the searching, too. It also searches tour operator websites which are not available to the consumer - except by using WorldVentures. Here's a link: http://bobstottern/worldventures.com. See You On The Beach!

Depends upon when you want to go to Hawaii, too. Many airlines sell their empty seats through last minute fare deals. Once you check the primary consolidators like Expedia and Travelocity, check the airlines directly. For example, United, Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines sell their empty seats at low prices within two weeks of travel - often you need to be a frequent flyer member to hear about the deals, so sign up with them online to get on their email mailing list. Also, Tennessee may not be a "hub" for Hawaii-bound airlines and you may need to consider the connecting flight-factor in getting to a "hub" for the cheaper fares. And, it depends upon which island(s) you want to visit -- you will have to figure in the inter-island flights, as well.

Talk to a couple of travel agents. They should be able to give you a couple of different package ideas. Normally flights with packages tend to be less expensive than booked directly online because they are negotiated although occasionally an airline will offer a discounted fare. The best way to get the cheapest airfare to anywhere is to be flexible with your travel dates.

I've always had luck using http://www.reallycheapfares.com or www.pleasantholidays.com/. Flying from Massachusetts to Hawaii and have never paid over $600. Book early.

Aloha Air always has great packages, so do the other airlines.
