www.annualcreditreport.com is the government's site... it gives you access to the 3 bureaus and doesn't cost a thing, but those bureaus will try to convince you to pay for their report and to buy your FICO score... but you can only get your report once a year from each bureau for free, so you may want to go with one now, another in four months, and the last 4 months from there (8 months) and then start over with the first a year later (4 months from there). You don't get your FICO for free, but you can at least check for accuracy. If you've been denied credit or employment based on one of the reports, you can also get a free copy.

As a previous answerer metioned, annualcreditreport.com is what you want. But be aware, the free report does NOT give you your credit score which is what many banks, insurers etc.. use to evaluate you. The free report only lists your history of payments, account statuses and the like. This is useful but it really doesn't mean all that much without the score. Also, keep in mind that the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, Trans Union) may have different numbering systems for scoring. the "FICO" score is the most used number and ranges from 300 to 850.

You can go directly to each of the 3 major credit reporting companies and get a free credit report from them.
Experian, Transunion, and Equifax.
Good Luck.

This one really is free - as long as you haven't had one in the past year.
Also, if you have been denied credit for anything, you can request credit reports by contactin Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax directly. They all have their own websites for contact information. These reports will be mailed to you free of cost.

AnnualCreditReport.com is absolutely free, as opposed to FreeCreditReport.com, which will sign you up for some "financial service" and charge you $12.95 per month, if you don't cancel within the first 30 days.
