The Permian was characterized by an atmosphere that had 50% more oxygen than today. Plant life was luxurious, though dominated by gymnosperms. The large animal life was dominated by synapsids, mammal-like reptiles. It was a rich, complex ecosystem destroyed by the greatest mass extinction of all time, 251 million years ago.
