Meat is something that is eaten at nearly every meal. It used to be that eating meat was a sign that you were well off. The poor went down to the river or lake and caught fish for their meals.

Abstaining from meat and eating fish is a self-sacrifice that places us in the same boat as the poor.

Personally, i really like eating fish, so it is not much of a sacrifice for me. instead of eating fish on Fridays, I eat bean soup, peanut butter and jelly, or macaroni and cheese,

Because apparently fish isn't "meat", and Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during Lent.

Not all Catholics do. I don't. However, your're supposed to remember the 40 days Jesus spend in the dessert when he was tempted by the devil. He stood strong and rejected temptation. So we thanked him for that and remember his sacrifice and his love for us. We sacrifice our tastiest desire-meat. By doing this, we are always remembered how Jesus die and his love for us. Many Catholics also fast and give up something like beer or chocolate. It is a season for remembrance, respect, repentance, and penance.

They persecute their membership. This is a mere USA Catholic event. The rest of the world knows God blessed us with animals. To shun the gift of God is a sin. Plus, the bible does not say eat a fish on Friday. Of course the Catholics do not use a bible in services. They use a little black book.

It's not that they DO eat fish, it's that they DON'T eat other types of meat.

It's a form or sacrifice, at least it's supposed to be.

I don't see the sacrifice in deep fried cod or a $40 plate of Chilean Sea Bass or smoked salmon... hehehe... YUMMY...

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

With love in Christ.
