You want a parrot, huh? lol. I've got three - a blue and gold macaw, a citron cockatoo, and an amazon parrot. OWNING A PARROT IS A FULL TIME JOB! Parrots are very intelligent animals that require A LOT of attention...you can't just keep them in their cage all day long and expect them to be happy; they are prone to depression, aggression, and sickness if they are not kept stimulated and happy in their environment. They have to have toys to keep them busy, and must be carefully socialized. I'm not saying that owning a parrot is a bad thing - but maybe you should start with something smaller and less likely to live quite as long - you know that parrots can live up to 100 years, right? Hence my earlier statement, it's a full time job! Cockatiels are usually a better alternative for people who want to begin with birds - they are intelligent, small, and much easier to handle. I've owned many varieties of birds, so if you have any other questions, please feel free to email me!

Are parrots easy to own? Are kids easy to own???
Parrots are a joy, but they are not like any other pet in the world. Tammy did a really great job explaining their constant care. Most people think you can get this pretty bird and put in in a cage in the corner and it will talk to you and be cheerful. Thats so far from the truth.
I would reccomend going to a nearby pet store that specializes in birds, or look up nearby breeders of the parrots you are interested in. Go and talk to some of the people who work there and get a feel for a parrots personality and behavior. Also, pick up BirdTalk magazine and check out some of the breed profiles. A lot of research must go into finding the parrot that's right for you.

You don't own parrots. Parrots own you. Also, your dog may not like the parrot. The parrot may not like the dog. In fact just today I had my baby greenwing macaw perched on a chair looking out the window. He was a very happy boy. then along came our dog, surfed himself up on the window seal (from outside) to say Hi and boy did my macaw have a fit. It scared the crap out of him. never heard him yell so loud before. Ok, I have 9 parrots. A greenwing macaw, 2 pet cockatiels, 2 pair of breeder tiels, and a pair of breeder quaker parrots. Here is how my day went today. Got up, uncovered all the cages, said my hello's to each of them. Mixed formula for the baby, fed the baby macaw, let him sit and perch while I cooked mixed veges, rice, beans, potatoes, noodles, and eggs. Mixed it all together. Emptied and washed all the food and water trays with soap and water. Filled all the water trays. Filled all the food trays. Got the vege trays out, filled them, put them all in the cage. cuddled the macaw, put him on his cage, cuddled my tiels, put them back in their cage, cleaned house, cleaned 4 cages, emptied the vege trays. cuddled some more. Now I will fill the vege trays at 5pm again. and change water again. it's a job and just like have babies around your house. they cry, have fits, and give lots of love but require mounds of time and attention. It can be a great thing if you love birds like I do. Or it can be a bad thing. Start with a small species such as a cockatiel or quaker. These are both big parrots in small bodies. They can talk, follow you around, and spend the whole day with you. You don't need much knowledge as far as rearing goes. When you get into the larger parrots you need be somewhat knowledgeable as they will and do develop bad attitudes and can and will bite if no boundaries are set early on. Which can make living with a parrot hell. Do research and decide which is best for you. and remember most parrots are very loud. VERY loud. when someone calls my house all the birds in the house start squaking, clicking, whistling and I can barely hear the person on the other line. Keep that in mind. NOISE NOISE NOISE---all the time. The noise is music to my ears. But, i'm sure not everyone would share my opinion.

Parrots require more attention than a dog. They are loud, messy, and intelligent. They are expensive to buy, house and maintain. You cannot ignore a parrot leaving it in its cage 24 hours a day. It will develop very bad habits some of them self destructive. It is something like having a child.
A bird is a great pet for the right kind of person but a terrible choice for a lot of people

Not always, it depends on what kind of parrot you have. Each breed is different just like every bird is different. Cockatiels are social, african greys are very talkative and can get picky but are very sweet, cockatoos are affectionate but very neurotic. It all depends on the kind you want. Over all, parrots are great pets. They just need a lot of attention and a lot of love. Good luck!

Parrots can sometimes live longer than a human. Think about it before you get one. I live in a military town and I always see a bunch of parrots in the classified section of the local news paper. It's so sad. Definitely think of your lifestyle before taking on an animal.

Tammy nailed it on the head!!!!
Also consider wing trimming, nail grooming, beak filing and REGULAR vet check ups, not to mention the cost of bird toys!!!!! which a parrot can chew up a $25 toy in a matter of days!!!!!

Somewhat. They need lots of time out of the cage, at least 3-5 hours a day and they poop every 15 minutes, and like to chew things. But since you have a dog already, you might be the perfect candidate.

African Greys are the most suitable at talking the Congo African gray s . they have the intelligence of a 4 to 5 year previous human infant. besides the undeniable fact that the smaller conures may also talk, merely no longer as sparkling because the Greys do. fairly some the parrots have the means to communicate besides the undeniable fact that the African gray parrots fairly know what they say. and may want to reply on your questions. besides the undeniable fact that the African Greys are type of extreme priced.
