He needs to be taken to the vet so they can rule out serious problems such as Kennel Cough and Heartworms. Make sure when you go to the vet you'll be able to answer questions such as:
When did this start? Is it worse when he's laying down or standing? Does it sound like he's coughing up mucous? How often does he cough? Is he currently on Heartworm medication and does he get it every month?
By knowing the answered to these the process of figuring out the problem will be a lot smoother for both you and the veterinarian. Hope this helps.

It might be kennel cough or a simple cold, I couldn't tell you for sure without hearing it. If he's not on hart worm medication it could be due to pressure in his heart due to heart worms pressing on his airways and causing discomfort. No matter which it is I would suggest taking him to a vet especially if you have other pets. Hope this helped!!! And don't get too worried about any of it untill you are told by a vet that you have something to worry about, your stress will only make your dog un-easy. They can all be fixed the first two with less effort than the heart worms.

My sister's lab-great dane mutt did that--if it is the same thing. It was like a loud, heavy half wheeze half cough, would go on for twenty seconds or so, and then stop. Her vet told her it was similar to people getting hiccups--its a harmless spasm.
If he doesn't seem sick other than the cough, just mention it to the vet next time you are in. If he does seem sick or mopey, you want to get him to a vet--a lot of doggie coughs require medicine.

It's kennel cough. It usually fades on it's own after a couple weeks but you should take him to the vet right now to make sure that's all he has. My dog had it and it was bad. The vet can also prescribe meds for him. Take good care of him and keep other dogs away because it is highly contagious from dog to dog.

Kennel Cough or Heartworms. Either way a visit to the vet is needed.

My mom's dog had that and it just continually got worse, and soon his nose was running and when she took him to the vet it was kennel cough which won't go away on it's own. If you can try and look and see if something is lodged in your dogs throat, if cough worsens or continues please see a vet

it depends what kind of dog. Some dogs with shorter snouts have what is called an elongated pallate. It can cause a dog to cough too. Check it out on the web.

if you have an older dog or a breed like a cocker spaniel that is prone to thyroid disease then have it's thyroid checked, or, your dog could also have bortadella, otherwise known as kennel cough, especially if it has been around other infected dogs. in any case, you need to take your dog to the vet. this is not normal.

If this is a long drawn out cough its probably heart worms, I would get it check immediately to catch this problem because if you wait to long it gets very expensive and the animal could die.
