Check into used/consignment tack stores. You can find some nice saddles for fairly cheap. I'm sure a google (or yahoo) search will help you find one in your area. Make sure that the people you are buying from are experienced with saddles, because it is important that the tree be in good condition. If the tree is broken, it can really hurt your horse!

Also, if you want to buy new, check into synthetic saddles. These days, synthetic saddles can be tough to tell apart from "real" saddles, and they can be much less.

When buying a saddle, make sure that it fits your horse properly. See if you can take the saddle and try it on your horse before you buy it. A trainer or the people at most tack stores are able to help you with this. There are narrow trees and wide trees. Some saddles even have adjustable trees.

Also make sure that the leather isn't cracking. You want a saddle that has been taken care of.

I would be very careful buying online. The saddles may be broken or very well worn. You also do not know what that particular saddle rides like. Some have very hard seats, while others are padded. Some may have been padded once, but after so much use, have become hard.

I think it is much better to buy a saddle where you can sit on it, try it on your horse, and make sure that it is the one that you want. They all feel different to sit on. I have 2 saddles, one was high end and expensive, and the other was cheaper. Both give a completely different riding experience and comfort level.

There are also two styles of saddles for jumping. An all-purpose and a close contact. All Purpose has a deeper seat, which often means more security and comfort. A close contact has a much flatter seat. The back of the saddle (cantle) is squared rather than rounded. I find these to be less comfortable. I think that the flaps are also shorter than the all-purpose, but not by much.

Make sure to get the seat size that best fits your behind. Saddles all come in different sizes.

Also, you will need stirrup leathers, stirrups, and a girth (unless you ride at a barn where you can use their girths). All of these also add on to the price.

(Sorry if you already knew some of this, I can;t tell what experience you have!)

It's quite possible to get a good quality used saddle for three hundred. You just need to look for one. I paid $75 for my first saddle years and years ago. We think it was made back in the eighties, and I still have it and ride in it today. It was made well and it's been through the mill, but it's a great schooling saddle and I don't have to worry about getting it wet in the rain at a show.

I would check local tack stores for items on consignment, equine.com under the tack area, and ebay for good quality used saddles. I also recommend that you stick to brands you've heard of. Collegiate and Dover's Circuit saddles are great mid-level jumping saddles. They're reliable and well-made, and you should definitely be able to pick one up used for three hundred, considering they retail new between six hundred and a little over a thousand. If you haven't heard of the brand, there's probably a reason, and I 'd hesitate before buying a no-name saddle. It might be poorly crafted, the leather dye might stain your breeches, etc.

Also, it's a good thing to remember that if you're not showing on the A or AA circuit right now, you don't need an $1800 Pessoa saddle. I'd been riding over ten years before I got my first saddle for over a thousand dollars. The fact of the matter is there are plenty of great mid and entry-level saddles that will provide safety and security over fences. Ovation, Collegiate, Dover's Circuit, etcetera are all brands to explore. Good luck!

She is actually NOT being ridiculous here. Yes, $300 is very reasonable for a used saddle, but I have seen many great saddles for this price, or lower. Just go to your nearest used tack shop, or go to ebay.com, or craigslist.com and search for english jumping saddles at this price. In fact, I JUST looked at saddles on ebay and found numerous beautiful ones in great condition for under $200. And even a decent one for $50. So YES it can be done.

The most important thing is that the saddle is comfortable for the horse and you, not that it is a fine leather masterpiece worth thousands of dollars. Try my suggestions and good luck ;)

Depending on what you need in a saddle you may be aboe to get a very nice used one for $300 or so.
New that would be a little cheap but you never know.
E-bay is a great place to look for saddles if you know the size of your horses back and the size saddle you need.
Different brands fit differently and you should try it on the horse to make sure it fits on his back well.

Your mom may have more sense than you realize. It is quite possible to get a nice saddle for $300, depending on where you live and are buying it from. Check the classifieds in the local paper, go online and check out e-bay and the other retailers, and look at the websites for the different tack companies. Don't be afraid to wait for sales. Auctions are another good source for tack and equipment. Good luck !!
