Marshmallows originally date back to ancient Egypt, when they were made by using sap from the Marsh-Mallow plant. When it came to America, by the 1800s it was also made with sap from the same plant, but now, gelatin is used. As a matter of fact, in the 1800s, marshmallows were made not only with a sweet taste, but had medicinal value as well, they helped soothe a sore throat! Marshmallows of today are made with sugar, gelatin, gum arabic, and flavoring

I have never heard of that and don’t understand how they would help soothe a sore throat in the first place. For me (have had tons of sore throats growing up) swallowing a marshmallow would sound painful.
