Sarah, this happens naturally and replicates how the angels, cherubims worship God daily - you cannot do it artificially and if there is pride you will feel uncomfortable - it requires brokeness and in my experience it just happens when your spirit is in a state of worship and exaltation- i was looking for the scripture to give you the reference so you could read for yourself -but i cannnot find it right now - it is beautiful - just rejoice - lift up your heads oh ye gates and lift up your hands ye everlasting doors and the King of glory will come in - as you open up your hands to worship He comes rushing in - hallelujah

The lifting of the arms is a sign of surrender to the Lord as if to say, Lord here I am, I am yours. I have seen people raise their arms straight up in the air and some people reach out. That is just the personal preference of the worshiper I would think. To me to raise the arms straight up is just be happy in the Lord and worshiping him from your heart. The ones who reach out are maybe in need of something and are asking the Lord to help them. Your question was a very good one!!!

Interesting, raising your arms 20 or 30 years ago was a sign of praise or adoration (kinda like a hug), but now it seems to be surrender....

This is a sign of surrender. When people pray with arm reached out is some are saying Father I stretch my hands to thee. some may do this for several reasons.

I think people do this because it is an expression of good feeling. It means you're really feeling the mood of what is going on. The same thing happens at a rock concert. People throw their hands up in excitement and sometimes do the devil horns. Also, it is popular in the hip-hop culture to "wave your hands in the air like you just don't care."

I see many do it ,different ways. When I do , it's arms out and palm side up. I think, I would like God to know ,I'm ready and open for whatever wants for me. I'm new to this kind of worship. GOD BLESS

I'm still a very inhibitted Englishman myself - very shy by nature! Its a natural body language thing I think, your body posture reflects the intensity of your devotion and the closeness, love and worship you feel. May God bless us all, and bring us to appreciate more and more fully how much He loves us.

I raise my hands to God when I feel the sweet presence of the Holy Spirit, and I do it as a form of Worship.

Because that's the way the Apostles prayed - to symbolically lift their words up to God.

We have good examples of this in the Word. That alone should be our inspiration.
As it is written: "And Solomon stood before the altar of Yahweh in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward the heavens. " (I Kings 8:22)
And
"Let us lift up our heart and hands to God in Heaven." (Lamentations 3:41)
And
"Therefore, I desire that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting." (I Timothy 2:8)
