Well, I live in Germany myself (and I am a German national as well). I have listed a tourist website for you (see below) that you should check first.

Germany and Austria are very safe countries, even in the night hours.
Austria usually is more expensive, but Germany is quite inexpensive (except the high gas prices over here).

I think that you should stay 2-3 weeks in each of these countries...a trip for only 3 days or so is not a good idea. Germans are really amused about American tourists, who are visiting Germany for just 3-4 days only.

You don't need anything special for visiting both countries. And, I would suggest you to visit Berlin, München (Munich), Köln (Cologne), Frankfurt, Stuttgart and also Wien (Vienna) as well...

Again, if you want more infos & details, you can email me thruh Yahoo and I might give you more details and better information.

Greetings from Germany! :-)

Purchase a lonely planet book for those 2 countries, it will tell you what to see and places to eat, stay, and just things to look out for, as well as what to do. You can plan your trip as you go or can start reading about the countries and planning before you go. As for packing, just bring the essential things you know you always use. Clothes should be simple, always bring items that are easily layered, so you don't have to have a bulky coat if it gets cold. Bring at least 2 pairs of comfortable shoes, usually a sandal, like some tevas and some type of closed utility shoe. Anything else you can always buy there. Also you will probably be doing alot of shopping for yourselves and other people so bring an empty, large duffel bag in your luggage. The way back home you always have more than you came with so keep your luggage light. Only take one litlle carry-on back pack with your passports, copies of your passports, all your money, chapstick, toothbrush + paste, some wet wipes are always a good thing to have when you travel, as well as antibacterial gel, some little snacks. Although I'm not sure what you can even take on the plane anymore, but those are all good things to have on hand. Have fun and remember travel is an adventure, make it your own thing and try things and go places that are off the beaten path, you learn so much more that way.

sounds nice-I visit Dusseldorf Germany every two years and have done so for at least 6 visits
I would say that when I visit there with my wife in the future I would spend 3 days there-that should be enough.
Pack your usual items-you can buy most any toiletries there-bring a wash cloth-theirs are like sand paper
When and if you have questions simply approach any youngster 35 years and younger-they know English very well-they will be a little shy but they were very helpful to me
The train system is Very good and this would allow you to comfortably visit say Colon or other cities.
The German people are extremely nice and enjoy Americans-AS long as you are respectful. Keep in mind that Europeans in general thinks American are kind of crazy-I look at my visits as being an US ambassador-respect is a give and get thing
In Dusseldorf they have an "old section" which is probably 3 miles x 3 miles of shops and restaurants open to pedestrians only I have a blast there

There's a lot of things to answer, so the first thing for a first time traveller is "use a travel agent" that's able to prepare you well.

Normally I'd say, do it yourselves.

Check the National Tourism Bureaus of each country - they have the most information.

And check you are gettign the best deals on accommodation by comparing prices offered on this hotel directory.

That's a start ..... but take in all the good suggestions here and elsewhere. You'll build a great idea and have a fantastic experience. Good luck with your travels ( here's some links ) :

I stay interior the US and there are shops right here with entire sections committed to pre-cooked vegetarian nutrients, plus end result and vegetables, and "nicely-known" nutrients that has no meat products in it. you may desire to be waiting to stumble on what you like, we're not all meat eaters right here.
