Training is more than telling. Training includes teaching, helping, showing examples, and getting the trainee participating.
To train a child in the way he should go, you first need to travel the way you should go. Children are observant. They will know if you don't practice what you preach!
Show them the way to go! Teach them about the way to go! Guide them in the way to go! Go with them in the way they and you should go! Have them practice doing things they should do! Be there to help, but have them do their part as much as they can.
"Training" involves directing growth, or to make proficent, by teaching, practice and example. This should be the goal; to make proficient. This involves training in all aspects of life.

By using God's word as your guide. Read and study your Bible and begin early reading the Bible with your children. Also, living a godly life in front of them is an excellent example. There are so many ways to answer this question, but the main thing to remember is God has given us what we need to know how to do this. Read 2 Timothy 3:16.

Would this not require a great deal of sensitivity to the needs, talents and challenges of the specific child? The "way they should go" would be highly dependent on this. If you tried to force the child into a direction that is not suitable, they would definitely "turn from it" in adulthood.

Translated into layman it means bring up your children properly, teach them what is good and bad, teach them honesty, integrity, fear of God (in the correct sense, a person who knows what God can do will avoid harming others intentionally because in the end it will catch up with you, teach them respect, to love their parents and elders, teach them not to to unto others what they do not wish done to them, teach them to take care of themselves and of others, teach them love and mercy, teach them fortitude and character, discipline etc.
One should never interpret proverbs literally. Bring them up right and you will never have reason to fear they will stray off the straight and narrow path, meaning they will be respectable, honorable, good individuals when they grow up.

by open minded example, i personally think it's also important to admit when you make a mistake ie - "sorry mommy was such a jerk about your room being a mess, that wouldn't really make me want to clean up either. would you like some help?" that way your kids learn that no one is perfect, but when we mess up we should not only apologize but also try to make it right.

Is that the one where it talks about setting a good example, being involved in their lives, supporting them in school, talking to them about drugs, alcohol, and smoking?
